Having problems please help

I own a 86 VN750. I thought it was some sort of electrical problem had a friend take it all apart and go through the wiring and everything was fine. He said the only problem he had was in the ignition switch. So i bought a new one got it hooked up turned the key and nothing happend. Checked all the connections and everything looked fine, but still no lights when the key is turned. What would cause this to happen? I have the shop manual, but nothing like that is described in troubleshooting.

The simple place to start is the fuses. If you left the battery hooked up when you replaced the switch, it's possible something could have popped the fuse when you were hooking it back up.

The battery was not hooked up when I installed the new switch, but if you bypass the ignition switch the starter turns over and all the lights work so im very lost...

Are you turning the switch to the first position and not all the way to the right. The first position is where it should be the second one is a Park position which turns on the Tailight only! To keep you from being ran over beside the road after Dark I suppose,Also check the Kill button on the right handlebar and clean it .It must be in the on position to even crank the engine with the key on There is also an interlock switch on the clutch and the side stand,That should give you a few ideas to start with.Happy hunting ,I hope this helps.

If you see it on my bike I did it
