LED Lighting

I'm thinking about replacing the stock taillight with Clear Alternatives ( CTL-0046-L) - which is a whole new assembly... or just keeping the stock housing and installing (LED-46-L) which is just the LED board.

Has anyone installed either of these?

The CA website lists that these parts are for model years 86-05. I have an 06... did the part change in the final year?

It is my understanding that I don't need to install a load equalizer unless I install LED turn signals. Correct?

How about an HID headlight? Recommendations?

And, what about a headlight modulator?

I have the Clear alternatives lenses on my '03 and i love them. It doesn't look particularly bright during the day, but it does it's job well at night. I also replaced the stock turn signal lenses and replaced the bulbs with LED'S. Had to update the turn signal relay, but it was well worth it. And you don't have to install an equalizer for the brake lights. I'm planning on posting some pics of it soon.

I have the Clear Alternatives Brake light board installed in the stock housing. LOVE IT! Bright and clear! Very easy change and no other modifications needed to make the light work.

I also have the brake light board in the OEM housing. Very easy to install and very bright. I also like the vastly reduced draw on the electrical system when I am sitting at a red light. I believe the Jury is still out on this forum as to whether or not that helps with stator life span etc, but anything I can do to reduce load I think is good.

No changes. Will fit just fine.
But, IMO... it's a lot cheaper and works just as well using the stock tail light lens instead of the clear one.

And, what about a headlight modulator?
See lance328`s recomendations in post #8 for HID conversion kit on Ebay.
https://www.vn750.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15036

Not sure if modulator will work with HID bulb.
The kit lance suggests has both halogen and HID bulbs and either can be used in HI or LOW beam position.
So if you put the halogen bulb in the HI beam position you can use a modulator there, and have the HID on LOW beam.

Note that some other HID kits only have one bulb, so if it fails you have no headlight and the Vulcan reserve lighting unit (RLU) will not work.

I think this is the modulator I would choose.

Two years ago I installed the Clear Alternatives LED board and took measurements on the electrical draw before and after the switch to LED. See post #13 on THIS THREAD.

You will love your board if you buy it. Shines great through the stock lens. Not a single problem even after two years.

Thanks for all the prompt and informative replies! This forum, and the people on it, are great!

I ordered the Clear Alternatives taillight LED board.

Regarding the HID headlight kit referenced above: where are folks locating the two ballasts? Does the kit come with enough wiring or is a trip to the electronics store needed?

I may replace stock turn signal bulbs with LEDs eventually, but brake light and headlight are more of a priority for me.

Thanks again everyone!

Rubyrick,

Your signature indicates you did the spline lube at 10,650 miles. Just curious as to their condition. Did you have to replace any parts? My '06 has 8,000 miles.

I know that asking about tires is like asking about oil or beer preferences... but I'll ask anyway: how do you like the Pirellis? I'll be replacing tires in the spring.
