the brake handle pushes on a plunger and a spring. The spring wears out. They are sold together. Replace and your problem will go away, At least it did for me.

What happens is, due to use, the spring becomes compressed, and will not push the handle back out all the way to the hard stop. This allows the slop and the intermittent activation of the switch causing the brake light to flicker on and off. My old spring was visually shorter than the replacement due to the compression. Being as your bike is 23 years old, it is a good idea to replace the piston(plunger). In my 86, the rubber on the plunger was very much deteriorated.

I have ordered from cheapcycleparts four times. Expect 3 to 5 days to get the order out plus shipping time.
