charing system

hey all.
i just bought me an 01 750 vulcan as a fixer upper, the charging system doesnt work. i did the ohm check on the stator and they all read good and i did the check to ground and they all read a small amount of ohms like a short on all three wires not just one. but then i did the voltage check when reving up and it goes from about 7-8 volts to up around 18.
what do you all think, is it bad.
any info would be helpfull, thanks

I'm sure Slim or Vulcan Joe will chim in here in a bit...Slim has a write up on the testing.. I am not sure where it is.. you can do a search on the R/R testing.

If you did the measurements correct, your stator is bad. There should be no continuity from any of the stator legs to ground, and the AC voltage should be a lot higher.

The stator windings are connected together in a 'star' configuration, and the resistance of each winding is quite low. So if any of the windings is grounded, they all appear to be grounded.

thats what i was thinking but i was hoping i was wrong, i also tested my r/r from the stats found on another thread and i think it is bad to. i already ordered the r/r and was going to try it before ordering the stator. if the stator is bad it should'nt hurt the new r/r just to try it right?

If you haven't read the threads about Ricks stator and R/R, they aren't reliable. If you're in a hurry, buy from Kawasaki. Otherwise, send the old stator to http://www.tpe-usa.com/ to have it rebuilt better than new. May take a while, but that's where mine's going when it craps out.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!
