Battery strap and box

Has anyone had the hooked parts of the battery box break off, so that the securing strap/band won't connect any more?

I bought a new Westco m/f and it has now failed. When I went to replace it, I found the loose strap/band sitting on top of it. I had just gone over some rough terrain, so I assume that the battery took a bad bounce and caused the plates to short out. Who knows when the strap failed. Any way I am now out $80+ for a battery.

I have temporarily replaced the battery with a standard lead acid type and secured it with two 4 1/2 inch hose clamps. I can't see the point of buying a $75 battery box replacement just to risk these delicate little points from breaking again. I will howeverremove the lead acid battery for storage and replace with an AGM, M/F in the spring.

With all of the reported battery and stator problems reported on the site, I was wondering if this was additional cause of failure, strap fails, battery fails, stator fails.

I have not seen any with a broken strap, but it can happen. There was a problem with the Westco battery shorting out internaly, yours may be one of them. Below is a link for a used battery box at a great price. A shorted or weak battery can cause stator an R/R problems. Below is a link for an MF AGM battery that is designed for vibration resistance, and the new ones are 210CCA.

Thanks

Thanks for such a complete and helpful reply. I was aware of the new battery, but not that it was supposed to be more vibration resistant. I am going to pass on the battery box for now, but it was great to see the part available and cheap. Thanks again.
