Need Help

I atempted to start my bike friday, it had been several days since i last rode it so I put the tap to prime for a moment. I cranked on it until the battery was dead. I put the battery charger on it for a while and tried again it would fire but not start. It finally started but was running really ruff and the idle was low i let it sit and run for a while and it died. after it died it would not crank. I put the battery charger back on it this time for several hours. I tried it again and it started I rode it to the local shop (for new tires) and it ran fine. I picked up the next day it started but ran ruff enough that I had to keep it reved up when i came to a stop. now it will crank but not start. The bike prior to Friday started and ran great.

sorry for the long thread but hopefully it helps with the diagnosis

Welcome to the Vulcan forum Ringo.

Is battery voltage at least 12.5 v at the battery terminals when fully charged, and engine off? If not get a Maintenance Free - Absorbed Glass Mat type, not an ordinary wet cell battery.

Get NGK Iridium spark plugs. DPR7EIX-9

That should make a big difference in getting the bike started. If not maybe you have some trash in the carb float needles flooding the engine.

Check out the TEN THINGS link in my sig. You might find something else there.

You're also going to have to check your R/R and stator because your battery charges but doesn't seem to hold the charge. Could be your battery but could be your charging system too.

If you are cranking and cranking, that little battery will go dead pretty quick so I don't feel like that's unusual. You said your bike ran great til Friday. Did you just fill the tank before this started? It sounds like you got some bad gas.

I put about a gallon in it the last time I had it out, just to top it off. what gets me is it ran fine after I charged the battery, but when I picked it up it was running bad again

My question is will having a low battery affect the way the bike idles.

I pulled the battery ( because the local shop didn't have a replacement) and put it on the charger. I also replaced the spark plugs, when I pulled the old ones they looked alright but smelled heavily of gas.

We will see what happens when i put the battery back in.

Great! But the real test is whether or not the new battery will hold it's charge. If you have the same starting problems in a week or so, your charging system will need to be thoroughly checked. Of course, one could not rule out yet another defective battery.

BTW, exactly which battery did you install?

A low battery will make our bikes run "weird" and if you ever are out and your battery drops a cell it will be the craziest thing you ever try to keep running!!!

Glad to hear it is back up and running... but it never hurts to check your charging system to be sure!

I put a "high maintenance" battery in it because the shop would have to order an AGM

I charged the old battery and started the bike the volts were jumping between 11 and 13

with the new battery the voltage leveled out and at 4000 rpm it read at 13.5
