Head Light has a Mind of It's Own

'95 VN750

For the most part it won't work. But it'll turn on at various times. Normally when I either start the motor or cut it it'll switch on or off or off and on. When I hit the starter without starting the bike it'll turn on. Then I'll hit it again without turning the bike and it turns off. There is no predicted pattern I've picked up. It's not the bulb - not the fuse. Just has a mind of it's own.

In addition to that the gas gauge decides if it wants to work or not sometimes. I know that somewhere in the circuit they're connected. I'm cleaning my carb now and my next tackle will be to take my Volt Meter and attack the headlamp. Anyone point me in the right direction?

Try claening the contacts on the start button and the HL low/high switch, and check the connections in the HL bucket and under the left side of the fuel tank.

If this fails to improve you may need a junction box.

Garage
you do know there is a relay that prevents the headlight from coming on until the engine is cranked don't you? Here is how it is supposed to work if you turn the key on the taillight and the instrument panel lights will come on ,oil,Neutral and turn signals if you have the switch turned on for an indicator right or left ,the head light will not be burning now. When you hit the starter button and the engine cranks and the stator puts out voltage it is connected to the headlight relay and the head light will come on and stay on until you turn the keyswitch off again if you stall the motor it will not go off unless you turnoff the key,If the engine fails to startand it cranks fast enough foer the stator to produce voltage the head light will come on until the keyswitch is cycled again. If this is how your bike is acting ,don't fix it ,it ain't broke. If= iti has different symptoms than what I described then we'll work on it.

If you see it on my bike I did it

Thanks. The FIRST time it went out is when I stalled the bike during a test drive (don't worry I got a KILLER deal for the bike). The most important thing is that the HL barely ever works when the motor is running. But that stuff is great to know - turn the engine enough and they will turn on until you turn the key off. Start the motor and they will turn on until you turn off the key. But JUST turn on the key and they should NOT be on... check! Looks like I still have to pull out that meter!

On the 8 pin connector that has 7 wires move the solid blue wire to the open slot.

OK - I moved the solid blue wire to the open slot in the connector. So, theoretically, the headlamp should turn on with just the key turned, correct? If that's true - it's still not working. I started the engine as well - no dice.

Check power output at the blue wire, if you do not have 12 volts then your JB is crapped out. If you have 12v than your problem is elsewhere.

Check the back of your JB for acid damage!

NEWBIE QUESTION: I assume that means putting the + and - leads right on the blue wire, correct?
