I broke my own rule

My bike had a new wet cell battery in it when i got it and has functioned flawlessly..till yesterday, when it cranked slow but started and the next time it just grunted and turned over a time or two.I figured that the el cheapo wally world battery had give up the ghost and went and hunted down a Deka Mf Agm that would fit the first one was half an inch too wide,I got one that did fit but the terminals were reversed. No biggiei flipped the battery around and the posiitve cable would reach but the neg. wouldn't.I unbolted it from its normal place on the frame ,took off the right side cover and removed the front battery box bolt which bolts to the frame and bolted it down there.I had to reroute the harness ground around the outside of the battery box, under the top frame rail and it was long enough to plug up without any splices or modifications.I 'm a happy camper ...wrong.I turned the key on and and hit the button and the starter relay clicked and no crank. So then I proceeded to do exactly what the book says not to and hit the starter button and tapped the starter with my trusty 1/4 " ratchet and it tried to turn over the engine ,I then realized I had wasted battery money ,I try to justify it by saying it was going to need done soon,But when I put my old battery in my brother in laws polaris atv which had a dead battery it fired up like a new one.Any way ,I ended up pulling off the starter, oil needed change in about 300 miles any way so that is out of the way.I went down to my aforementioned bro in laws house and used his air conditioned shop /pout house to tear down the starter and all that was wrong with it was the brushes were corroded in the rigging and stuck. After a bunch of cleaning and sanding of the brushes ,rigging, and commutator and a good overall cleaning I put the starter back together and bench tested it and it worked great.I put it back on refilled it with oil,hit the starter button and it never started as fast since I have owned it,How much was battery and how much was starter I don't know but I like the way it worked out.Even if i didn't check it out before running out and buying a new battery.

If you see it on my bike I did it
