R/R and Stator troubleshooting

Hello again!

First, please let me apologize. I usually wouldn't ask to have someone hold my hand through something like this, but I have only a limited window and I really really really want to get back on 2 wheels!!

As you may or may not know, my bike has been down since mid April due to a charging issue that had me pushing the bike home Well I've had too much nice weather with her in the garage collecting dust! I have cleared my schedule from noon tomorrow through 9am Tuesday in hopes of fixing her up. But I have NO IDEA how to proceed.

What I'm hoping for is a little help from those of you who have gone through this or know where the posts are I need to get through this. I need to trace down the electrical issue exactly so I know what part to replace.. I have a volt meter but I don't know what to test or what I should look for. I have a good assortment of tools and am willing to buy more if needed.. can you perhaps shed some light on what I might need or what might make the job easier?

Please just point me in the right direction.. then I'll get some beer, crank the music, and lock myself in the garage with the laptop til I get 'er done!!! Again, sorry for asking. Normally I'd chase this down myself, but I have such little time and I really would love to be riding ASAP!

Thanks to all in advance and happy safe riding!

Remove the left cover beside the battery and disconnect the plug under the battery case from the R/R. Set multi meter to AC volts, start the bike and test the three yellow wires on the plug. Check two wires at a time but testing all three @ 4000 rpm, note the voltage output. Then get back to us.

While you are there check the three yellow stator wires connectors "in front of the battery box" and see if they are clean, tight and not burnt or melted. Check the R/R connector for the same thing.

Sorry all!

I was surprised for so many responses so quickly.. I had some work to get finished which took me away from the forums through the night but now it's playtime!

I wasn't smart enough to charge the battery to full. It's on the charger now (10:30Est) and I'll take your suggestions about the wires. The side covers are already off and my voltmeter is standing by. The beer is chilling in the cooler and I'm charging the laptop as well. I figure we'll be into the whole thing here after lunch! Hopefully we'll get 'er done before the holiday weekend passes by.

In the mean time, any suggestions on a replacement part that Iron Pony might stock?

When you get the bike started and check the three yellow leads coming from the stator ,you should have between 50and 70 volts ac between any two of them all and check it three or four times with every combination of yellow wires coming from the stator, at 3500 to 4000 rpm.
