Stator replacement, engine cover removal

Hi All,
I'm in the process of putting my bike together after replacing the stator and balance dampers. I was reading another thread about this and read that the outer cover, the one with 3 screws, needed to be removed for this process. Clymers also said to remove this but I didn't see any reason to so I didn't and everything came apart and went back together just fine. Did I cause any problems by not removing this cover first?
