Intermittent Headlight Flickering

Returning from a recent night-time ride, the headlight and instrument lights began fllickering intermittently. This lasted about 20 minutes until I pulled off the highway and stopped at a traffic signal light, whereupon the engine staggered and died. It was like someone had just turned off the ignition. The bike started right up when I pressed the starter button and, by keeping the rpm above 1500 or so, I got home OK. Checking things yesterday in my garage, the battery voltage varied from about 12.5 at idle to a steady 14.5 at 3000 rpm; clamp-on ammeter around the negative battery lead showed
-0.8 amps at idle, +0.8 to +2 amps at 3000, but no flickering of lights at all. Don't know if this variability in ammeter reading is a characteristic of the ammeter, or might indicate a loose connection somewhere in the charging circuit, ...or?

Check your frame ground beside the battery and check the ignition switch.

Normally, a phantom like that is a loose connection. Batt wires, ground wire at the batt, also people have had issues with "older" ignitions cutting out intermittently.

Must have been a bad connection at the battery. Re-tightened both positive and negative. Took an all day ride - no problems. Thanks to all.
