no crank..

Hey guys how's it going? I'm new to the forum and the Vulcan community so I need a hand. So I bought a 1997 Vulcan 750 last week and it needed a battery. The guy had it hooked up to a car battery and it started up but after bringing it home I put a battery on it and in an attempt to start it, it won't crank. The only way I can get it to crank is by jumping the solonoid. I have no neutral light or headlight. Just recently the headlight came on and started working but I still can't start the bike with the button. I'm very stumped and upset as I haven't even gotten to ride it yet.

Headlight is controlled by a relay which turns on when the engine is running, possibly can get triggered when cranking, but wouldn't come on when turning the ignition from 'off' to 'on'.
Previous owner might have done a mod to have it come on with the ignition, but it might just be the stock behavior you're seeing. Search for the 'blue wire mod'.

Neutral light should come on. It's possible the neutral sensor switch or related wiring is bad, which would prevent the neutral light from coming on, AND it would prevent the bike from cranking. There's an interlock that won't send power from the start button to the solenoid unless EITHER the bike is in neutral OR the clutch lever is pulled in. There is a bypass mod for this. Search for 'two wire mod'.

More information for people new to the vn750 can be found in a link in my signature.

Well I figured it out. The killswitch was acting a little funny which I found out is common on these and I needed to make a new negative terminal which I did using 6awg car battery wire. Bike fired right up. My newest problem is the petcock leaks horrendously so I decided instead of spending 90 bucks on one I spent 25 to do a tw200 gravity feed conversion. Headlight came on after I cranked the bike.
