Alternator Rotor Frustration.

Ok, so some of you know I'm on my 4th stator. All by ramdom dumbs. My first one typically failed. Second started out semi bad (used). The third from AJ was good as gold but I decided I should replace the balncer dampers while I was in there again. First step of my dimise. I swapped everything out & fired it up. Everything was reading electrically right but had a vibration. With the help of members I realized I didn't have the balancer marks set right to the alternator rotor. Disassemble, reassemble. At this point I noticed the rotor hit the stator and that caused it to short. Ok, so I'll buy a new one. I got a decent deal. Replace & Blam Thr rotor hits the NEW stator. $#!*. Fine. It hit only one wire & lightly. Seal it & I'm probably good. Well That's before I figured out the reason she's not firing now is because the timings off. But all the marks are lined up? Everythings snug! I double checked everything I took off before I put it back on!? So I start to dissasemble again. Oh ****! The key on the shaft is gone... smoother right out. At some point the rotor was cocked on the key abit & that is also why the rotor wables (ever so slightly) But enough to hit a stator and destroy what would have been left of the key. So when I was trying to start the bike to check for life, it wouldn't fire for being out of time. And thank god it didn't. I cant imagine a random spinning rotor on the shaft would be good. I don't know when the key f'd up but the rotor now has a wear mark as well & I probably should replace it to. I'm going to see what I can do about filing out the groove on the rotor. Any hoo, I'm basically just venting right now. Besides, everything hinges on me getting what's left of the key out of the shaft.
Hapy Easter ALL!

They say bad luck comes in sets of three, Kanuck. I hope getting the key out so easily stopped the second set from starting! Good luck with the repairs and have a Happy Easter.

Damb PM showing up first. I didn't even see this. I bought a rotor this morning. I know, impatcient in age. We all get it. I would have much sooner bought off someone I trust! Maybe next time. Kanuck/Jason.

I'm sure I'm going to need something sooner or later. Just don't become the lady with a bunch of bike parts! lol

Just out of curiosity does that keyway use a half-round woodruff key or a piece of square keystock?
