No, they are not the same. I replaced the stator on a 1982 GL500 a long time ago. You still have to remove the engine, but it is a 15 minute job. The CX/GL bikes use the engine as a stressed member, so there is no frame to deal with. Just put a jack under the engine, take out the bolts, and drop it right out the bottom. I sure wish the Vulcan was that easy.
