Ignition coils

Hey guys!

I just confirmed both my coils are bad (both failed resistance test in one winding or the other). I don't see any recent posts on the topic of replacement. Would you guys Suggest replacement with OEM parts or is this a good time to consider an upgrade? If you had to do coils what would you do?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Ben

Using a screw driver as a stethoscope it was loudest from the cover that the pick up coils hide behind ... I was guessing rod bearings ... But I'm an amateur for sure.

It could be the damper bushings, they're right next door to that round stator cover, toward the front. Worn bushings let the damper gear wobble which produces a knock. The gear will eventually tear a whole in the left side case. About $50 for parts to replace bushings.

Any way to tell if that's my problem outside of replacing and seeing if the noise goes away? Does replacement require engine removal?

Does require removal or at least tilting the engine.

If they're bad enough to knock, there should be a lot of play between the damper gear and bushings. The bushings may have cracks. But you would have to get in there to look.

If the bushings are already coming apart, there should be small chunks of rubber in the oil screen under the drain cap. So an oil change might show.

Edit: Here's a pic of the engine tilt, damper gear is toward the front.
