Usually you want the gauge where you can see it while driving so you'll know when trouble starts. Is it a direct connect to the battery?

yes, its direct to battery with in line fuse, It has a mosfet rectifier fitted so charge goes straight to battery.

Always good to know what's going on with the charging, especially when deciding to ride toward home, or another 50 miles away.

As I just found out, low volts will cause backfire and rev limiting that mimics a fuel problem. Same as the backfire when cranking with a low battery.

yep, The symtoms are very similar and without a volt meter its hard to know what is wrong. The bike needs to have a good battery and a solid charging system for it to work properly so one glance at the volt meter tells me all is ok on electrical side ,Then its back to the long list of other probables.
