Rebuilding the Starter

has any one rebuilt a starter on the VN750? I am starting to wonder if my starter is burnt out. I have charged the battery (it now reads 12.5 volts), tried jumping the starter directly, and the starter still won't turn over the engine...I am going to try to push the bike to see if the engine turns over, but I realy think it is the starter. I found a starter on ebay for 125 and a new one is 300+, so to keep things cheap I want to rebuild it.

It seems strange that the starter would crap out on you so fast if it was working well when you parked it two months ago. I`ve had many GM starters apart to replace brushes and the drive gear, but no experience with motorcycles. Too bad you are spending all your R&R wrenching instead of riding. Maybe if you pull it off for a bench test, you can see something that is not obvious while it is mounted on the bike. Good luck Mike.

I have batteries on other motorcycles and atv's show 12.4 -12.5v but not enough amps to crank, replaced batteries problem solved. You can hook jumper cables to your cage and ground to bikes frame and touch the starter lug to see if it is the starter.

Thanks Ohio...I can't ride the bike even if it were running...I had to sign a waiver saying I wouldn't ride while on leave, and the plates are expired...

The starter was acting like it was hanging up when I parked it. Meaning, when I shut off the bike you could hear the starter dragging as the engine shut off...thie didn't happen all the time, just some of the time...I plan on taking the starter off to insect it, just wondering how much of a PITA it is to take apart and put back together.

If you could hear starter dragging when you shut off the engine you have a problem with the one way clutch or for some reason your starter circuit was engaged. Either case could fry the starter bearings, brushes, and commutator.

The starter is easy to rebuild, just take your time.

thats what I am thinking lance...hence wanting to rebuild the starter...I am also going to replace my Stator and R/R next winter while I am doing the rest of my upgrades...I want my electrical system to be at 120% when I start adding all my bells and whistles.

So who is this Ohio???? Lance in GA, or me in Alberta.

You`re the mechanic slim, and I agree with lance, just take your time with the starter and you will do fine.
