Whimper for help

Went for a ride into town the other day and ended up trailering her home. By all tests, the starter motor gave up the ghost (doesn't turn more than three times jumping the post). I'm in the process of cleaning everything out and checking internal connections but don't like the Stealer's price of $500 for a new one. Hoping someone has a spare starter motor laying around that wouldn't mind parting with it .....

Take the starter off and open it up. Clean and lube before you go to the trouble of getting another starter. Oh and you have to drain the oil before you remove the starter.

Ok .... false alarm. Kinda. Got inside and found the brushes hung up. And a broken spring which I replaced from an old lawn mover starter. So it's all working now.

I should have realized to drain the oil first .....

I know I read here a short time ago about a starter rebuild kit that someone used, and I saw one on ebay this week for $30-40. Wwwaaayyyyy better than $500 for a new starter from the stealer.
Of course dragons fix from the junk parts drawer, at no cash cost is the ideal we all look for.

I have the new brush plate on order but won't bother putting it in until I HAVE to.

And then I'll be sure to drain the oil first ........
