Lake Michigan Circle Tour 2015

http://www.lakemichigancircletour.com/

Planning to take this tour next year. We are going to by pass Chicago and take the ferry from Muskegon to Milwaukee then head north. Plan on hitting the tunnel of trees on the way down then home. Took a week off for this.
Anyone ever done this? Maybe some pointers of where to stay or things to see?
All are welcome.

A buddy and I did the Lake Michigan tour last year with the intent of swinging way west of Chicago . A friend told me I really needed to take Lake Shore Dr. though the City. We were apprehensive , but did it a 10:00 A.M., the traffic was light at that time of day. We came from the north went down Lake Shore Dr. till we hit U.S. 12 and followed it around the Lake never getting near Hwy. 80/90. This was one time I was glad I took a friends advice. Driving down Lake Shore Dr. with Lake Michigan on one side and the tall Skyscrapers on the other was fantastic. I believe that was the highlight of the trip for us. We left Traverse City and went north through the U.P. We did the trip in 3 days. The tunnel of trees is a nice ride plenty of curves, and the tourist traps in the U.P. are always fun.

Thanks. Did lake shore too but during rush hour. Sucked. Sounds like it could be nice, though.

So, looking forward to the upcoming trip. Just thought I would ask what are some of the more important items to take? We will be in the middle of nowhere at some point in the trip, so wondering what items have saved you a$$ in the past?
