26650 miles. But I think I had some to do with the failure. To much to explain, just don't weld anything on your bike with the battery connected like on a car.

So your saying it was good at 26,649 miles, welded at 26,650 and it failed at 26,251 miles? mmmm welder might have done that, stick or wire feed?
Not sure a 0.30 wire will burn that up though, thats small current.
I cant swear by it though, now a stick on the other hand, fried!

Tech,

Mine shorted to ground quite suddenly in the middle of a long circular route that I often take (on a section of the Natchez Trace, as a matter of fact). There was nothing slow or gradual about it. While doing a routine instrument scan, I saw the voltmeter take a sudden nosedive from its usual 14 volts down to just a hair over 12. So, I knew immediately that I was running on battery power alone. It was just as if someone had flipped a switch to the "off" position. Now, I know this is more information than you asked for, but I thought you might want to know a few of the particulars. Anyway, to answer your question, the odometer reading when all this took place was 50,505 and some-odd tenths miles.

Tech, I ordered and installed the stator from Electrosport. That was done just a tad under 6,000 miles ago, and with no problems so far. I can't say whether or not it will last as long or longer than the original---only time will tell that. However, I can relate to you that the replacement stator generates more amperage than the original.

Back when the bike was still fairly new, I first checked the charging rate; it was putting out 15.86 amps at 3,000 rpm and did so until its demise. After installing the new stator, I checked its output and was quite pleasantly surprised to find that it generates 17.88 amps at that same 3,000 rpm. I have never bothered to check the output at a higher rpm. simply because it doesn't seem to be necessary.

In your other posts you stated you have 160,000 miles, how many stators have you gone through? Just so I know how many to keep on hand.

That was my first VN750, i had bought it from somebody else so i never had put a new stator in it. Original customer said that he had it done at 90,000, but this was 1985 model, he could not remember if he had it done twice, but he could remember having it done only once for sure.
My present VN is at approx 30,000. No problems yet with anything on the bike, all is OEM. Bike has not been glorified!
Have been hearing of early failures such as 6000 miles, i am wondering what is going on there, providing owners are not trying to light up their bikes like the 4th of july.

Thanks for the info, it's funny you mention light up like the fourth of july. I jist bought a 6000k super white H.I.D kit. The bloaks will see me miles away! Cheers!
