Some words about the Member Map

There is another thread, about 6 pages deep at the time I type this, that speaks in depth about the "Member Map". At this point it basically amounts to a history lesson on it and problems that arose therein. After you read this, I urge you to read that thread also to back-fill you with more info on this subject. I'm starting a new thread solely for the purpose of making it easier for new members to understand what the "Map" was meant to be and how it could be tons of fun and useful to you. So here goes: The "Member Map" started life as a forum tool that each member could peruse through to find other members living nearby them or whatever other geographical area they so chose to research. This function was devised by members with more cyber knowledge than I will ever have. Many kudos go to those involved for investing their time and efforts in its launching. Imagine for a moment that you could go to the Map and see that there were fellow owners within decent riding distance to you. You could have the comradeship of those people who have the same machine that you do and probably at least some of the same experiences. You'd have riding buddies. You could organize rides or meets/gatherings of "X" amount of people. Basically you'd open up a lot of fun! Thus was the initial objective of the Map. At least as I personally viewed it to be. Other long term members may chime in here and offer their own thoughts on it as well. For example I am in Puyallup Washington just to the east of Tacoma Washington. I have no idea if there are any other 750 Vulcans anywhere near here. Virtually all of the people that I have any dealings with here on the forum are literally days away from me in the center of the country or back east-coast way. I've never met, face-to-face, any member from this forum. The Map would make my personal riding/wrenching pleasure more...... well, pleasurable. Assuming that there is anyone decently near me, the social experience would be enhanced. So, we've established that the idea of the Map is still as valid today as it was back in the early days of its existence. Good idea then. Good idea now. However, on the bummer side, we've also established that the Map isn't running. It's not now functional and hasn't been for quite some time. There were some problems with its operation that you can read about in the other, original thread. SO the question comes down to this: With the knowledge of what the Map should be and what it could do for you, would there be sufficient interest from the membership at large to revive the Map from its slumber and get it up and running again as it was originally intended? You already know what my vote would be. While I have the time to mess with it I simply do not have the knowledge on how to do it, so I'm not the culprit to make it happen. We all own a rather unique, and, especially as time moves on, fairly rare but intensely fun machine. Some of the long term members have indeed met, ridden together, helped each other, and generally established great friendships that would not have occurred had it not been for their Vulcans and this forum. The recent passing of a one time member gives clear, positive examples of the types of friendships that can develop IF YOU ONLY KNOW WHO IS WHERE. For all I know there are 20 bikes within 50 miles of me. Or, I might be all alone out here. And so I open the table for comments and suggestion..........

Something I forgot to mention in my narrative: I opened this new thread more so for the new members so as to essentially make it easier for them to understand the subject. Here is a basic summarization of what it WAS and IS and what it could mean to them without having to wade through 6-ish pages of thread. Also, a new thread tends to get more attention than adding on to such a long thread.

member tanner was the one who started it but he had differences of opinions regarding whether newbies should introduce themselves with a few other members and hasn't been on the board in a while. he may have taken the map down, because last I knew it was working

I remember him, of course. I am hoping that there will be enough general interest in having this tool available again that we could persuade him (if someone is still in contact with him) to jump back into the fray and get it operational. And if not him, then perhaps someone else could devise a similar option for us.

I remember the map I think and I was in the middle of the southern desert. That spelled right? Did I spell Sahara or Chocolate Mousse?

I further submit, to whomsoever are in positions of authority within the website, that if the Map does become operational again either in its original form and intention or "removed and replaced" like Obamacare, (PLEASE that was just for fun, not doing any political statements) that it be made prominently access-able. I don't remember how it used to be found within the website but perhaps, upon its rebirth, make it either a new category or one of the sub-headings in the geographical regions category. I really don't remember how it was setup before.
