Question Lost Keys

Couldn't find a thread on this, but I have lost my keys to my 1995 Vulcan 750 (yes I know, dumb to keep both keys on the same ring!). For whatever reason my VIN isn't in the Kawasaki system (I bought the bike from a private seller last year). So Kawasaki keys says they can't help me. I've taken it to a mechanic who says he can replace parts to install a new system with keys, but the parts will cost $390, that's not counting the labor. Any suggestions for what to do? I don't know if I could find someone who has a similar bike who would be willing to make a copy of their key and sell it to me, which would save me a ton of money, or if I need to keep pestering Kawasaki until I find a more reasonable solution. I don't want to sell the bike, so I'm open to any suggestions or ideas people might have. Thanks!

The screw is loctited from the factory. You can't use a screwdriver unless you open the lock....which needs a key.

if you take the helmet lock off, your key code is stamped on the back of it. it is a 5 digit code and contains numbers and letters. KM is correct, you do need the key to open the helmet lock so you can take it off. but the helmet lock is easy enough to pick. Of if you cant find anyone that can pick your helmet lock you can cut the bar out with a dremel or a hack saw. once you have your key code, anybody can look up the code and cut you a new key. new keys plus the cost of a new helmet lock (if you cut it open) is much cheaper than $400. Once you get your helmet lock off PM me and i can tell you where to look for your code.

and go check in!
