engine loses power, then quits at highway speed

Hi, Have an '03. Had a weird thing happen twice now. I'm at highway speed and motor begins to lose power slowly until it quits.Once I glide to a stop, I crank it over, won't start. Put full choke and it starts but will only run on full choke. After about a minute I can get it off choke and it's fine. No telling when it will happen. Can be 5 minutes into a ride, or 20. Only common denominator is that it has happened at 50 mph plus. Thanks

sounds like POOGS.. search the forum and read the versus about POOGS (Phantom Out Of Gas Syndrome)..

a surefire way to test is when it happens, open the cap on the tank, and try to start it with cap open (without choke). if it starts and seems to run right, theres the problem.. tank is not venting properly. easy fix

POOGS was my first thought too. You may notice that it happens when the fuel gauge is reading a certain amount. My '03 has done this a few times, opening the cap always does the trick. Seems to happen most right after a short roadside break, with 1/2 to 3/4 tank. It also whistles out of the vent when sitting in the sun.

I'd clean the vent, but I'm getting a new tank. Brand new, black and silver! Bye bye dented/creased tank!

Looong time ago, before I put it on the road. Put it on the trailer for it's DMV salvage rebuild inspection, cheap tie down strap broke, and she fell over while I was walking to the other side. Made about a foot long, deep crease on the left side. Same area had a shallow knee dent from the previous owner.

Inspector at the DMV never saw the bike, because he never left his office. I was so pissed.

Same thing happened to me the other day twice. First thing I thought of was kick stand switch or POOGS. OPened up gas cap and she started up and ran so was clearly POOGS. Found nearest gas station and filled 'er up no troubles after that.

POOGS is aggravating. Anytime it stops on you, leaving you on the side of the road tends to get upsetting. I've had that experience, too, a couple of times. But, as they say above, it's quite easy to remedy. When my bike was down over this past winter/early spring, I took the measures to prevent it. It's not difficult. All the info you need is here in the website.

TOC MCCTs
Saddlebags, hard mounted
Fork mounted tool bag (now hard mounted)
Relocated rear turn signals
LED turn signals, brake lights and running lights
LED license plate frame
Engine Guard and Highway pegs
National Cycles Low Boy Heavy Duty windshield
Home made lowers (nice)
Custom seat (made by a local guy)
Iridium plugs (DPR7EIX-9)
Shenko 230 Tour Master tires at 11,123 miles
Splines lubed at 11,123 miles
Luggage rack
Light bar with LED lights

It's in the forum list, only one with red letters. But here's a link: The Vulcan Verses - Kawasaki Vulcan 750 Forum : Kawasaki VN750 Forums

Where is POOGS? Beats me, I looked on several pages and haven't found it. You'd think it would be in Carbs and Fuel of The Verses, but no. Then there's one in Engine about Vapor Lock. Still no POOGS yet.

edit: Here it is, a sticky post in the main Carbs and Fuel section (main forum list): https://www.vn750.com/forum/22-carbs-...vention-7.html
