Question Scrap metal question

Hey -
When I was parting out Orleans, a couple of you all noted that some of the aluminum parts could be sold as scrap. I still have some parts from her that need to go (like the two engine halves), and will have a lot of parts from the Guest that need to git. Can someone advise me on how I'd go about selling stuff as scrap metal? Who does one call? How are they calculating payment (e.g., per pound, per ton?)? And in anyone's experience, will the Scrap Dude come pick up stuff or do you have to get it them?

(I wasn't sure where else to post this - if it's in the wrong spot, someone let me know and I'll delete and repost elsewhere.)

Thanks!

Your talking scrap aluminum from a VN750, right? I think it fits in the VN750 Gen Disc area - so I don't think anyone will slap your knuckles!

Scrap metal buyers usually buy it by the pound here in the US. Some places will probably have a service to pick it up but I am sure they would discount the value for doing so. You'll get the most out of it if you take it to the recycler directly. But beware that sometimes with vehicle parts you may have to show some type of proof of ownership. Lots of stolen parts, or in general, any metal item that can be picked up by a crackhead, are sold to metal recyclers and the police are monitoring them more nowadays. Just google for aluminum recyclers in MD.

But I think in Canada they buy it by the Imperial gallon.

call around to check prices before you go, I've done a bit of scrapping lately and I know in portsmouth ohio they are paying about half of what I get here in chillicothe. the place I go to is paying 220.00 a ton right now and 235.00 for scrap cars. the 220.00 is basically short iron or just a combination of all uncleaned metals. definately sort out your aluminum as it pays quite a bit more and it your not sure if it is aluminum throw a magnet on it (it wont stick to aluminum or stainless steel). copper also separate if you have any. if a vehicle is 10 years or older here you do not need a title but they will take your drivers license # and fingerprint without it.

Don`t pay any attention to him. It`s kind of an inside joke from a different thread.

In most cases, you will get more money for a used part selling it as a used part..not scrap.

So if someones balancer went out and took out the left front of their engine case, They might be happy to give you a couple of bucks for one...as opposed to you getting a few cents for it as scrap.

Everything sells on Ebay eventualy right?

You're right - I'm just frustrated with the hassle of the whole thing. I s'pose I could sell what's left of it on C'list as a parts bike. The frame is fine and I have the title. I'd just like to be able to move around my garage again as soon as possible!
