Parts Compatibility

I purchased a '98 VN750 a couple of months ago and have put almost 3,000 miles on it so far. All I can say is that I totally love this bike! I've been reading a lot on the forums and on various websites and have noticed that some people keep a few spare parts for their bike on hand, specifically final drives and drive shafts. It's something that makes a lot of sense to me so I thought I'd look into doing it as well. I've been doing some looking around on eBay and have seen some good deals, but I wonder how backward compatible are most parts? I know the basic design of the VN750 has been unchanged for many years, but are parts among different model years compatible? I looked for an online resource for this info, but couldn't find anything.

Re: Parts Compatibility

Best source for parts compare is the online microfiche at or There you can check various part numbers between the years and if they are the same part number.. well you know for sure they will interchange. One difference may be the painted parts like side covers, these have slightly different number due to the color. same for some outer engine parts between the 85 an 86-06. The 85 has a blacked out engine so things like clutch cover, acct etc for the 85 are black

Re: Parts Compatibility

Instead of buying a drive shaft and final drive, just do regular maintenance and you shouldn’t have any problem. Lately there has been a run on driver foot pegs from dumped bikes so you might want to look into getting extra. Maybe a regulator. But with as new of a bike as you have, I think you only need regular spares such as light bulbs, fuses, o-rings (for oil changes)…. Just make sure you have a maintenance free battery .
