my speedo is dim -- what do I do?

About three weeks ago I got my '94 VN750 with almost 24,000 miles on it. That's pretty old...

I rode it at night for the first time a few days ago, and noticed that the speedo and tach were both rather dim. I could reed the tach, though I'd prefer it brighter, but the speedo was completely unreadable to me.

I went through the owner's manual but couldn't find any mention of a way to adjust the brightness level of the speedo or tach, so I figure it's probably a matter of replacing the bulbs... True?

True. There is no brightness control. Check the bulbs. IIRC there are 2 in each meter housing.

How do I open them up to check, and what kind of bulbs are they? Neither the manual nor the Clymer's guide I got mention the speedo/tach casings.

I put the pages of the service manual dealing with taking apart the gauges on my MobileMe iDisk. You can download it at:

http://public.me.com/cceravolo

The part numbers for the bulbs are:

92069-1020 for the meter bulbs
92069-1007 for the indicator panel bulbs

Looks like they are 12V 3W bulbs, according to the Kaw parts diagrams.

Thanks for the info, I will follow up.

BTW, just a sanity check -- how does a "normal" VN750's dial look? Nice and bright? Or on the dim side but equally so between the tach/speedo?

At night it is nice and bright with a green tint. Equal brightness between the tach and speedo.
