Wink Temp

Since I'm new to the bike, did a search of the temp readings. Wasn't sure where on the gauge it should be.

Search showed it should be just to the left of the temp icon, or if in traffic on top of it. Well, I noticed it was just getting to the right, but not off the icon. Was deciding whether to worry or not, and it occured to me, if it's 102 out, it may run just a little hotter than normal.

But was curious if anyone has used anything like engine ice or something similar to help run a little cooler.

On the road in hot weather mine runs almost or right on top of the icon, and in town and traffic lights it will pass it to the right just a tad...
I have home made highway bars on mine and have at times when on the road put my feet on them with the boot soles acting as deflectors toward the radiator and dropped the temp hand a bit... Makes me wonder if the cooling system might be a bit undersized, or that I might need to try another thermostat... Since I don't ride in cold weather, I wonder if I even need a thermostat at all... BTW-What is engine ice...???

Engine ice is something I've seen used on quads to help keep them cooler. Those that have used it say it drops the temp by about 20. I'm sure they have something like that for street bikes, or it may be able to be used in bikes as well. A lot of people that run drags, or ride in the desert use it and say it helps. May check it out and post back what I find. Now that we're in the hottest part of the summer, seems like a good time to check into it.

I went to http://www.engineice.com they claim that their product can keep the engine on a street bike in street applications up to 50 degrees cooler. It also protects to -27 degrees Fahrenheit. Here is another article on its street use http://www.engineice.cc/street_main.html

Read a few more as well, and all claims are the same... not worth the cash...however a product called "WaterWetter...both mechanics, and racers swear by it, and it is a coolant additive. You only need 4 OZ to treat 1 gal of 50/50 mix common coolant.

Me personaly, I will continue to use normal antifreeze and distilled water.

Water wetter is another one I've heard of them using.

Since the apps I'm used to hearing it used involved off road use, I can't say what it would do for a street bike, with either brand. Seems like there's one more that age keeps me from remembering the name.

Now I don't know if you just ride in average conditions if it would make a difference, but it seems both of them work well for extreme conditions.

With the temps here being above 100, I think I qualify as extreme.

I know one thing, if the bike has been in the sun for just a bit, I need asbestos underwear to sit on it.

Hmmm, may have to try that waterwetter, it is cheap enough and I would like to reduce my temp a bit during these hotter months...

I remember posts a while back about some folks trying water wetter in here. They said it did drop the temp gage a bit. I thought long and hard about getting some (in fact, Wally world carries a similar brand), but my question is what it does to our radiator long term. I just switched from the orange antifreeze back to the good ole green stuff because of deposit rumors. I figure if I'm that anal about antifreeze, I need lots more info about something I'm adding to a typically scalding hot cooling system before I use it.

Let us know what you decide. You are in extreme conditions!!

Thanks for the link. You are correct, they say it does help corrosion. Based upon the video- I'm pretty much sold on it now.

It looks like the recommended dosage is 4 or 5 capfuls per quart. Do you (or anyone) know the capacity of our cooling system? I think I may give it a shot. But- I think it will be better to put it in the radiator instead of the reservoir (or at least split add it) for better introduction in the system...
