Hitting the foot peg

This weekend I was on a foothill road in NorCal. Going around a corner I hit the nut that hangs down from the footpeg. I was surprised that I'd leaned aggressively enough to hit it. Is this common? It is hinged so I guess its not a big deal.

that is what the nut is there for... so you don't grind the pegs off...

The nut is called a "peg feeler". It is designed to let you know you are nearing the end of available lean. If you go much further, hard parts can start to scrape (i.e. center stand if making a left), which upsets the rear, and you go down.

So in short, it's a nice warning to not push it any harder.

Thanks. So now my concern is the highway rest I fabricated. Its a little higher but longer than the foot pegs. I'll need to lean the bike over and see at what lean it contacts. I don't want those to pivot the bike in a turn.
