screeeeching noise...???

Rode bike to work today - and noticed for the first time an extended SCREEECHING sound between 25 - 40 mph. Trip is only 14 mi and more stop & go and slower driving than I prefer when I usually ride, so not sure if it's there at higher speeds, too, but maybe I haven't noticed before due to wind noise.....

Occurs when either accelerating or decelerating into or out of the above speed range. Is this the fabled "coffee grinder" sound I've read about here, or something else? Sure doesn't sound healthy, and I don't want to ignore if it's a problem......any ideas????

The coffee grinder sound normally happens when the bike is cold and you are first starting out in the morning. After a mile or 2 it goes away. Can you tell where the noise is coming from?

As I only heard it while riding, the best I can do as far as locating the noise was from the engine area - below me - vs. toward the front or rear of the bike. Sound was still present 5-10 mi into trip.

**UPDATE**
When leaving work today - bike would not start. Not the usual 2-3 attempts to turn over situation - rather just a click-click-click sound coming from the bottom of the engine area. Engine was NOT turning over. Had jumper cables and got someone to give me a jump - no go. Same click-click-click sound - engine was not turning over at all. Initial guess is it's a starter issue vs. low battery. Grabbed a ride home and now trying to figure out towing/repair options. Not sure if morning sound related to afternoon dying - but still seeking suggestions. Any/all appreciated.......!!!

Yeah, the clicking is your starter relay (at least ya know that's good!); not sure that the screeching would be related to the starter, though, since that's a one-shot deal. Oil and coolant levels ok? I only ask that because I flushed my coolant system last weekend and got some screeching (lower right/center) early as the fluid worked its way back through the system - but that stopped pretty quickly. ??

Actually topped off the coolant level right before leaving. Did not check oil level (and now wondering why I didn't!!).

Will separate screeching and no-start issues for now - and obviously focus on getting bike moving. So, if the starter relay is ok - but the engine wouldn't turn over - does this sound like a starter problem (dead), a battery problem (not enough juice to turn starter or crank the engine) or an engine problem?

Appreciate any suggestions for troubleshooting at this point.....thanks.

See if you can push start the bike or pull the starter and see if it turns out of the bike. This might narrow the problem down.

There is a thread by Tcat and various others that are also having the screeching noise issue. So far we haven't been able to pinpoint the problem.

Yup, one of them. There is another but I can't find it. Tcat has also emailed me and we can't come up with a solution. It only comes on while under load and putting it up on the center stand to recreate the noise has been fruitless. It's frustrating but I'll be those with this noise are even more frustrated.

That's right, no one's had luck recreating the sound in the garage. What the heck's there - the oil pump and drive (but that shouldn't change under load, right?)? The balancers? Clutch? There's not a whole lot going on iup there, at least from what I can see (split the crankcase last night, so I'm seeing a whole lot of nuthin').
