Here in the Pacific Northwest it rarely RAINS, per say. Oh it precipitates a lot. Most of the year in fact. But honest-to-God rain, as in Texas for instance, almost never.
But, wet is wet. I keep some military gortex rain gear with me when the day is questionable.
Living here I am more disturbed by fog than rain.

I commute 36 miles every day rain or shine. A $30 Stearns rainsuit from Wal-Mart keeps me dry. The bike runs just fine in the rain.

Since the jacket I have (Tourmaster Flex 2) has a removable rain shell all I needed was a set of pants. Found these http://www.bikerrainchaps.com and bought a set. I just got them last night and it looks like I will be trying them out this week. Maybe even tonight.

Dutter,
I figured out a good way to roll up the Stearns rainsuit so that it was fairly compact, and then was able to strap it behind my seat sissybar. My toolbox doesn't have the cover, so I just took the whole thing off. The rainsuit fits pretty well in that space.

I also decided to go with leather like bags rather than the set of leather bags I originally purchased. Since I ride in the rain quite often I didn't want to ruin leather bags. I got some nice Tour Master bags from a guy selling stuff on this forum. Now I have a place for the rainsuit where I don't have to strap it on. Now I just have to find me some thin rubber overshoes to keep my shoes and socks dry.
