Valve noise

Well, I didn't buy the bike I looked at last night. A bit noisier than I was expecting. It did ride fine but it sounded horrible.

Sounded like more than cam chain tensioners to me. What do you guys think?

So you think it's only the tensioners tapping like that? The idiot he took it to put on other ACCT's that were painted black. I don't think it made a difference. He has the old ACCT's in the trunk and showed me. The engine also had a lot of oil on it and under it and really needed some TLC.
His guy just changed the oil with 20W-50, I told him to drain it out the side plug and see if there's any metal or plastic shavings in the screen, he was pretty clueless.
It's a 2001 with around 20,000 miles and he's asking $1,000 for it. He paid 800 for it a year ago and has another 800 in it with new tires and garage bills from carb cleaning and putting the pods back on, so he doesn't want to let it go for less than that.

That's what it sounds like to me. The engine is running steady so what else could it be. No oil in the coolant? Sounds like you can walk away so offer less and walk away if he doesn't take it.

I have an extra ACCT (believe it or not) so I'm going to offer the guy my time to try and do a MCCT conversion and see if that does the trick. That's if he didn't sell it yet. I'll keep you posted.

20w is way to thick when the oil is cold. Like molasses. At an idle the oil more than likely isn't making it to the top of the head.

To test the tensioner just remove the 10mm head and use a small screw driver while its running and turn the tensioner to see if it quitens it down. Sound like it may have a broken spring.

and remember there are 2 tensioners, one each cylinder.

you can easily access the front cylinder to do testing, but you may still hear the rear one clattering if its shot as well. but, you should be able to tell the difference.
