How much can i get for my motor?

Hello Everyone,

i am swapping motors for my 90 vulcan 750. my old motor has an oil pressure problem and it seems like the oil pump or something out of my technical skill. The motor has 15K and is otherwise in good condition. It fires up but obviously that oil light is no good. What do you think i can get for my motor as a whole to someone? or would it be better to part it out and ebay its life away. I live in riverside county, SO CAL.

As I mentioned in another thread recently, selling the parts off the motor will require you to take it apart. If you have the time for that, you could make more money off the parts, provided they all sell.

I think you're better selling the motor off itself, making sure you tell the buyer about the oil pressure thing. Not sure what a motor is worth that doesn't work. Maybe a hundred bucks? Most folks looking for a motor want one that's in good shape.

$200-$250 depending on general condition and cosmetic appearance. But like KM said if you part it out you can make more. Also if you are going to take it apart to sell it off you might as well fix whatever is wrong inside because honestly if you can take the thing apart you can put it back together. If you were on this side of the country I'd have no problem taking that off your hands (if I had money of course lol).

I wouldn't buy a motor with a known oil pressure issue. No way to tell how much if any lubrication related damage has been done. Also, anybody who knows something about the Vulcan 750 knows the stock cam chain tensioners are prone to failure, and can cause considerable engine damage. The complexity and the known problems with the 750 motor is why I have decided not to ever look for another motor for mine if/when mine fails. It's been a good bike (both of them) and I hope to pass 200,000 miles on Vulcan 750s before my '02 blows up.
