Not done yet...1985 VN 700

So my deal on the 2003 750 went south BUT... My boss at work has been trying to talk me into buying his 1985 VN700 since I started 6 months ago. I'm not sure I really want to make a purchase from my boss, but now I might think a bit more about it.

I have not seen the bike yet, but here is what he has told me about it.

After market pipes that bring them both to the right side. Not a fan of that really but it must/might mean the goats belly is gone. If so, then maybe the R/R won't have to be moved.

It sits most of the year, but it still runs according to him; needs new battery for sure.

Unfortunately that is really all I know at this time. I will talk to him about it more in detail tomorrow, but he had thrown the price of $700 around.

If the tank isn't full of rust and the charging system works, and all other systems seem to be operational, I might take a chance on it.

I would immediately put a new battery and tires on it and go from there. Being that it was assembled in 85 I doubt the splines didn't get lubricated, but I would obviously want to check that out too once I get it home. It is about 30 miles away and I hope that it would be safe enough to make the trip home. I would not be in a big hurry to get riding on it as I would go over it with a fine tooth comb to make sure it is right.

I do like the blacked out engine.

OleDirtyDoc, I see you have an 85. What do you think of it? Is is much less powerful than the 750? How many miles you have on yours? Besides the mods listed, what all major maintenance items have you had to do? Stator? Miles? Relocate R/R?

Can I really lose at $700?

Let's just say I had about $800 total in mine.probably has close to 38,000 on her.rode her for 3 years till frame broke(no fault of the bike.she'd been wrecked and the combination of all year riding(salt)).motor still has 150psi compression on each cylinder.no stator issues(crossing my fingers) relocated the r&r cause I lowered the bike and the swingarm hit it and broke the battery box.bike always started(after I got a agm battery).Wolfie also has a 700 and loves his.my 700 would have no issues keeping up with a 750(as she has already got 2 mid nineties 1200 sporties under her belt).the motor is going into an 86 frame.all I did was change the oil and had to do the clutch

You don't really notice a huge difference between the 700 and 750 engines. For $700 you should have a pretty solid base for a nice bike as long as you check out the usual suspects before you buy. Also check the frame for rust in any visible areas and check the stator before you buy also. Just bring a multimeter with you.

I guess the only drawback is it is my boss selling it to me. First I don't relish the thought of seeing him on a weekend and I would have to make a decision on the first trip. He lives 30 miles away and going there twice would just suck.

Once I hear more details about it tomorrow, I'll see what price he will sell it at. If it is $700 AND it still runs; I'll buy a new battery and take it with me. Install it and then check the charging voltage. Check the rest of the bike out and make a decision. Hopefully it will be safe enough to ride home.

I have already priced out some new tires and the battery is $75.

Tires and battery should always no on your list when buying a used bike. No matter what the po says they should be replaced.

Well when tires are obviously brand new that is not the case. The bike I looked at Friday had a new rear tire and I would not hesitate to have run with it.
