Help me calculate a rebuild estimate?

Well, since buying a new bike is gonna be a bit expensive, I'm now wondering how much money I would need to get mine in top shape. So let me describe what I remember about the bike before I parked it:

* It made a loud clacking sound that wasn't fixed with MCCTs. I'm guessing I need to replace the dampers (or was it dampeners).

* I probably need a new junction box. I keep having some minor electrical troubles and the box just doesn't look that good. No, I haven't tested it yet. I'm gonna look for the procedure to do so.

* It hasn't given me any stator problems at all, so leave it as it is, or change it out anyway?

* If I'm going through with taking the engine out, what would you guys advice I do to an '85 engine to get it in top shape?

* Last I remember, I might have had a bit of clutch slippage.

* I need to repair front forks and possibly rear shocks, although I'd probably have to check the rear shocks first (tell me how?) I think they do still hold air.

* I need new tires, likely a speedo gear (the one on the front wheel)... and a fuel sending unit, if I'm feeling picky.

* The carbs need drain bowl gaskets and new air cut-off valves. The choke assembly isn't in great shape, probably missing some pieces... but I can still use it.

I already looked up prices for the carb parts... about $100 for a couple o-rings and air cut-off valves. The speed gear varies a lot in price, but it's roughly about $30. For the fork rebuild I'm guessing around $60-$70? Someone correct me if I'm way off.

Couldn't find the rubber dampers on eBay. Anyone know of a good site to order them from?

As far as the clutch, I see different kits. Which would you recommend?

Basically, I want to see how much it would cost to get this bike running like a new bike. The most important or highest priority work would be on the electrical and mechanical side so I can get it running again. After that, I would say tires and suspension work and lastly the details like tachometer, speedometer, fuel gauge, paint, etc.

I only have about $500 to spend on it right now, and about $100 will already go into the carbs. So I want to basically make a prioritized list of parts I'll need and start ordering stuff as I keep putting away money for the bike.

For the electrical work I also made a thread about simplifying the whole wiring to bare essentials.

This is a super long post, but I need a LOT of help with this if I'm gonna make this thing run like new Thank you all in advance for any help you can give me.

Honestly, since there is so much involved, you might just want to get another engine (a 750 will work)....

If you DO decide to rebuild the 700 (I would), do a cyl hone/bore to the next oversize, and new piston and rings...get new upper cam chains...balancing dampers...send the stator out to Tim P...and the clutch is easy...as for costs....all depends on where from and which....

Tell you what...I know of a 700 for $300 bucks in Peoria, IL...talked to the guy already....all I want is the frame and title....willin to pay $125 for it...rest can be yours for the balance and shipping....Im thinking "YouShip" would be the way to go....

Lol yeah wish I could deliver that engine too...but I don't have a passport and gas would kill my bank account.

Ceal if you want to do the work yourself changing out dampers isnt too hard and only takes like 3 hours. I'll check around here where I got the last set. Most of the stuff you want to do is simple inspection stuff. Lots of time with a fine tooth comb.

I'm guessing you could do everything you want for just under $600 maybe less if you find some good deals on what you need.

Getting another engine would be tricky. First there are the shipping costs, and then the matter of getting it across the border, and then there is likely some import tax to get it through. Also, if the whole cost of getting the engine, shipping it and importing it is gonna be around the same as repairing this one, I would rather repair it and know that it is rock solid, instead of getting a used engine in uncertain condition.

Since you mention cutting the cylinders... the 700 is supposed to have cylinder sleeves that make it a 700 instead of a 750. Are these sleeves removable? Or would the shop just cut through the sleeves? In that case I would just get the 750 standard bore pistons I suppose.

$600 is quite acceptable if I'm left with solid bike to ride

I do mean to do most of the work myself... except for the machine work. I've rebuilt car engines before... I'm hoping it's not that much more difficult.

If you've done a car then a bike isnt too mch more difficult.

Since I'm in the middle of a rebuild myself I have done a lot of online shopping/price matching within the last several weeks. I have found Ron ayers to be the cheapest for the dampers and everything else.

Thanks, I'll take a look at their website. I think what I didn't like were their shipping quotes, but it gets cheaper the more you buy... so maybe if I get everything there the shipping won't be so bad.

Ron Ayers has been good to me combing shipping costs.
Balancers were $40.00.
