the service manual is better than the owners manual... every thing covered in the owners manual is in the first chapter of the service manual.

yes i have read that time and again in this group, but my son is a new rider and he would like to familiarize himself with the controls, etc., of the bike. I agree with someone else that had posted awhile ago that there is just some information in the OM that just is not covered in a service manual, even though the info might sound stupid to seasoned riders.

Motorcycle controls position have been largely standardized in North America for the past 30 years or so. Here is a link to the "Too Cool Motorcycle School" training manual:

http://toocoolmotorcycleschool.com/m...nual%201.9.pdf

Part Two, starting on page 26, is familiarization with the controls. See if this is what your son wants to study. The bike illustrated is a sportbike, but the control layout is the same as the the vn750. Note there is no kick start on the vn.

If there are still questions, come on back and ask away.

FWIW - I found a decent book-version of the service manual on E-Bay for $12 last year. They come up from time to time, just have to keep checking.

Book is great for seeing the pics (even with old eyes, Cindy) and doing things (without getting your computer greasy) but the downloaded manual has all the parts in exploded view so you can (almost) always see what is really there and count pieces when putting back together.

So I keep both handy.

I also have the original owners manual (and tool kit - not practical for use) for my '89 and if I find some time and can get it to look halfway decent, I'll see if I can scan and post somewhere for download.
