Whats your RPM at 100kph (62 mph) ?

Hello Everyone,

I've recently bought a 1993 Vulcan 750; Its my first bike. Its in great shape and runs well but I have no baseline performance to compare it to.

I'm travelling at 100 kph (62 mph) on 5th gear and the tach reads close to 5000rpm. What do you think ? Is this about right or does my bike need tuning ?
Thanks.

Sounds right. Some people see the engine turning that fast and might think something's not right but the engine is made to run all day long at 5000 rpm. No problem. That is until the balancer comes loose, then all hell breaks loose. But that's rare and not something to worry about.

There's other stuff to worry about.

Like the end of the drive shaft where it engages the final drive. There are splines that need lubing with Moly 60. It's something that should be checked out.

If you've been riding the bike regularly and haven't had to charge the battery after riding every couple of days, the stator and R/R are probably ok. If the battery keeps dying, let us know. Someone will turn you in the right direction to figure it out.

Mostly you're going to find that the bike is a freakin blast to ride.

Guess we'll need to know what size tire he has on the front.

True. I've still got stock. I guess it also matters what size tire on the rear. Again, I've got stock size.

I've got stock tires, according to the manual that came with my used bike.

I've just come back from another ride, not as windy this time. 5k rpm on 5th gear put me at 110kph (68mph) this time 'round. A bit closer to your figure, cegodsey.

By the way, the bike has only 12 000km on it if the odometer hasn't been tampered with. I'll check the splines, as recommended. Although I've had no problems yet with the battery I do plan on following the advice of relocating the r/r and changing to a maintenance free battery. I bought the bike earlier this fall and I've been riding it often since; the cool temperatures have probably kept some potential problems at bay.
Thanks again.

Don't change anything you don't have to! Get a voltmeter ASAP, and then replace your battery with a MF when it's time. If you don't have one, get a battery tender. And do the r/r like you said.

5K at 68 is 'bout right. And a '93 with only 7500 miles is a blessing IF you aren't having trouble with a rusty tank. By the sounds of it, you aren't having those sorts of troubles!

At 62mph, I'm probably a little over 4300, but under 4500 rpm's. Don't recall off hand what tire sizes I've got on there now though.

At 70 MPH I read 4500 RPM. Stock tires.

I don't believe you. I mean, something is wrong for you to be showing that. Either someone has messed with the speedo, or the back tire is not a 150/90-15.
