Garage Door Opener

Does anybody have a keychain remote garage door opener that works consistently? Mine works for a while, then something happens so that I have to hold it up to the opener again to get it to reprogram. I think it is the vibration from the bike, but then I don't know how these rotating codes work - does the remote hold an access key thing in memory from the opener, or does the opener remember what your remote's code is, or what?

Oh, I only let two things dangle from my key when I ride - my USB drive, and my remote.

I think alot of the newer ones continuously change frequencies. Maybe that's the trouble you're having. A certain range might not work well in your area.
One thing some guys at work were saying about the remotes for car locks/alarms was, if they held the remote against themself (supposedly acting as an antenna) they'd have better results.
That would be tough to do if it's on your keychain, in the bike, while you're on it, but ya might try holding it against something conductive on the instrument panel area.
Just an idea
I do know that when I tried to hook up a digital compass to my Vulcan, it wouldn't work when it was running, but worked fine when it wasn't.

If my opener is close to the gagues it wont work, if I hold it away the length of the keychain, it works fine.
Must be something on the bike afecting the Electrical field

Like that electrical coil about 10" below the instrument panel that generates the thousands of volts needed by the spark plugs.

you mean something like that?

Oh yeah, I tried the compass thing. Had it mounted right there between my gauges. Seems like I was always going around in circles (gee, those gauge magnets are awfully big).

As to the remote, it must be something with mine. It works for a month, then it freaks out. If I didn't keep my car's doors unlocked, I'd be in big trouble - locked out of the house.

I got mine off some place on the internet, because my genie doesn't have a keychain remote as an option. My last house had one available - had to get it from a dealer, and they didn't really know why anyone would have one. So they sold it to me for $5. It was a rotating code, and I never had a lick of trouble with it.

Just curious what brand of remotes you guys have, and where you got them.

I have a remote. When I'm ready to go home I call, if any one's home they open the door.... The only interference I have is when one of the daughters is talking on the phone.

i was going to use a generic opener and wire a button up the the dash, but then i moved, and the new place i live at doesnt use a generic type wireless system. theirs is based off of a car unlocking system, which is more work then i wanna put into it cause it is after all and apt, and i may move again!

Off a car unlocking system? That's different. Do you get a remote, or do they use your car remote'd door unlock feature?

rnewell - you oughta get one of these keychain remotes. It's about the size of a car power lock/alarm system remote, and you can just drive right into your garage without having to slow down to make the call. Great for sneaking up on teenagers.
