Advice on buying a parts bike

Hey guys! I have an opportunity to purchase a 2001 Vulcan 750 with about 3k on the odometer. There is no title and the bike does not currently run. It's been sitting for 5 years. It has some surface rust on it but it's otherwise in good shape cosmetically. I can probably get it for around 600 bucks. Do you guys think it's worth it to buy and part out ? If you want to buy it to make some money, it's a bit if work and will take awhile to recoup your investment.

If you want it for parts you need for your bike, you have to figure if the parts are worth the price.

For me, rather than spend 600 bucks on a bike I don't really need, I'd rather blow that money on my own bike, a new helmet, some real good gear, or a GPS/radio/com set up.

Figure if the engine is seized, the parts like the tank ( if not rusted inside) forks, wheels , seat, etc would be worth more than 600 bucks , it's up to you if you really want to deal with posting the parts, waiting for buyers, waiting for their checks to clear, packing the parts, driving to the post office, etc for each thing you end up selling.

To me, ain't worth the work....

Parting out a bike, say on eBay, is a big hassle. Some people make a living doing it full time. They are all set up for it, have a shipper and tons of cardboard boxes (or a source for them) they usually don't have another job, so they can devote full time to it.

For me personally, the money I would be likely to make parting out a $600 just wouldn't be worth it.

If you need the parts, and the parts you need are on the parts bike, then it may very well be worth it.

If I had $600 to spend on my own bike, I would spend most of it replacing things that it really needed, like oil changes, filters, moly paste, tires, battery, cables,, brake pads, wheel bearings, manual cam chain tensioners, etc.

I have a cheap GPS (Garmin eTrex), I have a cheap full face helmet (DOT approved), boots, electric gloves for when it really gets cold, that's about it for gear.

I am a motorcyclist, NOT a biker.

Thank you both for your honesty and insight. I have decided to let this bike go and spend the money in other areas. Thanks again. I think my problem is simply that I'm becoming a bike addict. Haha.

I can also relate to that. After just selling one bike, I still have 7, though one is not running right now. I love my '94 Yamaha XT225 so much that when the chance came along to buy a really nice '01 model dirt cheap, I grabbed it. I had intended to use it as a parts bike, but after going over it carefully, I decided it is was simply too nice for that, so I made a list of parts (about $250 worth) and ordered them from bikebandit.com, and intend to fix this one up for street use. I just haven't gotten started on it yet. Here's the list.

1. 2002 Vulcan 750
2. 1997 H-D Road King
3. 1985 Honda Goldwing
4. 2004 Honda Rebel 250
5. 2001 Yamaha XT225 (currently not running)
6. 1994 Yamaha XT225
7. 1971 Vespa PX150E
