installing bevel gear cap

working on project bike. got box of parts and am in process of sorting and putting on pieces. installed bevel gear pieces i was missing. the metal cap does not seem to want to go in. i saw a parts explosion elsewhere that shows the black rubber piece attached to the cap. i just have the separate cap. does it push in or is there something i am missing?

The rubber is supposed to be "one" with the chrome cap. If the rubber part's still in the housing, you'll prolly have to pry it out, work the cap into it, then put the assembly back in the gear housing; I don't think you'll be able to get the cap back into the rubber otherwise. (I could be mistaken; I've never had that piece apart) I use a PVC endcap and a rubber mallet to get the cap seated.
