Question 95 750 vs 2009 900 off the line??

Ok..sooo heres the scenerio.
I on my 95 vn750..all stock (motor wise) was out riding with my bro in law on his 900 Vulcan (2009).
He's a big boy (330+lbs) and me (262lbs ) were rolling outta a stop light and
i decided to try and out run him. (you know us testicular fortitude filled men)
to my surprize... I beat him?!?! My older bike vs his fresh one.?!?!!!!

I wound out 2nd and 3rd... and was pulling away from him b4 i hit 4th.
Now i was thinking he was letting me win. That is NOT in his nature.
At the next light.. i asked him what happend?
He just shrugged, LOL and said he couldn't get in front of me.

Personally i think my experience as a rider of umpteen years... may have
played a part compared to his barely 1 yr of riding. Unless his higher weight
had something to do.??

What are your thoughts?
Is the 750 that much peppier than a 900?

The 750 is quicker than many bikes, even the 1500. Your brothers size didn't help, but the 750 still will smoke the 900 even if you trade rides.

I had a 2000 Vulcan 1500FI (Fuel Injected) with a Vance & Hines 2 into 1 Propipe on it and my 2004 750 is faster no question.
I will say that it struggles a little with 2-up riding. I am 190 and my wife is 140. The 1500 performance didn't change at all between 1 and 2up riding. Couldn't even tell she was on the back. With the 750.. a completely different story.

Wow, that's very interesting. I have often wondered, and even asked some questions awhile back, about the VN750's speed compared to other bikes. Seems to me that mine is pretty doggone fast.

I have noticed that since I have been riding it for over 6 months now, it doesn't seem to "feel" as fast as it used to (still runs just as good however - better actually, as I had a better carb ASSY put on). I think it is more a case of me getting used to it than it not being fast though. I noticed the other day that I actually started to break the tire loose when shifting into second and getting on it going into a corner the other day. I was pretty surprised!

In my experience, it seems like if I wind first out pretty good before shifting into second, I am flying. But, because 2nd is such a tall gear, if I shift into it too early at a lower RPM, it takes a second or 2 to get it back up into the power band.

All in all, I love my bike, and it is quick enough for me. I sometimes think I would like something even faster, but not sure that I would survive that! Lol.

Ride safe all - no matter how fast you go =)

Mid 13's in the quarter mile on a stock 750 is pretty quick. Most cruisers in the same class can't hold a candle to that, and many in the larger classes can't either. Of course it's all relative. The guys on the sport bikes would laugh at this conversation!

I'll second that, the 750 is quick for what it is,but the 900 with a power commander and pipes and a big air kt will surprise you.And while my 1500 is slower through the 1/4 ,it will still jack the front wheel off the ground with my 290 lb carcass on it,And that is interesting on a bike weighing over 750Lbs,and I have witnesses who saw me do it last Friday,Denny

If you see it on my bike I did it

My bike feels fast too. Has the ear shave bigger jets etc...but then I tried to pull away from my buddies who have 05 BMW 1150gs and 06 honda st1300. My bike felt really slow after that haha. Actually the st1300 just dusted both of us, I hung with the bimmer pretty well. But the 1300 rider has 25 yrs riding compared to my buddy and my 1 year..

Bike is sold, thanks for the help guys. Ride safe.

I raced my buddy, VN750 against the Meanie and I took him every time. He took me off the line but by the end of the quarter each time, I had him. Not sure why but that's what happened...

That in my opinion is just the opposite of how it should have been, you should have taken him off the line, but he should have gotten you on down the road in my opinion...
I have owned 3 VN750s (an 03 & 2 06s) and now have an 09 stage 1 1200 Sportster which has to be done perfect off the line to do it right, where as the VN750s are great off the line, or at least mine were... It was like they hooked up real good by just hammerin anyway on them... But I don't think you are going to pass me after we are movin on down the road...
I think it should have come out more like what LP said-----
