5th gear??

Hi all... New rider here.. Took my 2003 VN750 on the highway for the first time (the Taconic for those in NY), going 60-65 in 4th gear at 5k RPM - and 70-75 in 4th gear at 5.5k RPM, I ended up staying in 4th the whole time. So I was thinking - when do ya'll shift to 5h gear?

Unles accelerating quickly, I shift around 3,500 rpm.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

I guess it depends on how & where you are ridin, crusin roads with no fun I would shift my vn750 into 5th anywhere around 3.5-4k just for crusin, in the twisties is a bit of a different story and she got run on up there open throttle or for hold back...
On my present bike (1200 Sportster) I would say about 1K less in the rpm range, its geared a bit higher but is a shade lower rpm bike, I've only seen 7.1K on it, where I have seen the red line on vn750 many times... I think at 7.1K on the Sportster it was probably bumping the (stage 1) rev limiter, the vn750 does not have a rev limiter...
I think you will get a lot of different answers on this...

It'll take 5th without complaining at 25, provided you don't put it under much load. Cornering in 5th is possible in some situations.

On the other end of the scale, I like to get to merging speed before doing the last shift or two, so that would be 65-70+ in some cases.

Guess what... I still do that, even though my bike is geared much higher than the vn750, I'm thinking that it's mostly a habit to make sure we are in the highest gear...lol...

I'm confused at your numbers shaygonen.

When I am in 5th gear at 70-75 mph I am at 5 to 5300 RPM.

1 question.... When you start from neutral, do you shift down for 1st?

It seems that you ARE in 5th gear at the RPM you stated.
