oil

I know everyone hates oil threads, but I have a few questions.

I change the oil every 3000 miles. If those 3000 miles are typical commuting or cruising miles, the oil level is still fairly full when I change it. But I just returned from a 1000+-mile trip, and my oil level was very low when I got home, even though I'm not due for another oil change for another 1500 miles or so.

1. Do we somehow "burn" the oil at a greater rate when we're putting in 300/400-mile days at highway speeds?

2. Is it OK to simply refill (top off) my bike with fresh oil, and wait until the 3000-mile mark to change the oil and filter?

And, while I have your patient attention, here's a lingering question: is Castrol 4T Motorcycle Oil (10w-40) a different product that Castrol 4T Oil (10w-40)? In other words, does the "motorcycle" designation really mean anything? (I ask because it's easier to find the latter than the former product.)

Take the filler cap off and sniff the oil. IMHO, if it smells ok, not a burnt or scorched smell, top it up and carry on riding to the regularly scheduled oil change.

( You didn`t spring a leak on the engine during the trip did you?)

I am sure there is a difference between the Castrol 4T and their motorcycle oil. I just figured out a short time ago that a lot of questions like this that I was asking, can be answered by Googling them. (Some can be a real pain to find as well.)

X2 on what OHC said, and I am thinking that the clutch addative stuff is probably the main difference, and the vn750's cultch does run in your engine oil...(Meets API SG and JASO MA2)...
That would just be my thoughts, using the WAG system of course...lol...

Thanks, Dog. I don't know much about the science of engine oil. But I just read about the JASO MA2 standard. Sounds like the motorcycle-specific version of Castrol is what I'm looking for.

Only made one long trip, around 1,500 miles there and back on interstates. Didn't use any oil. As suggested previously, top it off and change as scheduled. I'm too cheap (and don't believe they are worth their highly inflated cost) to buy motorcycle specific oil.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

I know some bikes will use some oil at higher rpms. My best friend has a KLR that he bought new last fall and he uses some oil on long highway stretches so he carries a bottle in his gear. Some engines are probably a little closer tolerances than others, within the same model. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but now you know you need to keep an eye on it.

As far as the JASO MA certification, (not meaning to always plug Rotella, but..) this is one reason so many of us have used Rotella for so long. They always claimed that their product was tested and worked well in wet clutch motorcycles, but because they were primarily an HD oil they never bothered to get certification for our class of vehicle. Apparently they listened to the motorcycle crowd over the years and their latest products are all JASO MA certified. For the price you pay even for the full synthetic, Rotella is really hard to beat. That's my 2 cents worth. Not dogging on Castrol products or any other motorcycle specific product in any way! A lot of them are very good oils. But if you read all the tests that have been done on the Rotella oils, and compare them to any Motorcycle specific oil, usually the Rotella has better results...

The main factor is changing your oil regularly. Any oil will protect your engine if it is kept clean and not run for too many miles. I tend to go middle of the road price wise when it comes to my oil, and change it regularly, every 2-3000 miles. (usually I only put a couple thousand miles or less on throughout summer months--running 15W50 Mobil One, then change it out in the Fall when weather cools down, to the Rotella. Might change it one or two times during winter months depending on how much riding I get to do)

Fergy, which Rotella do you use? (I have never used synthetic.)
