Question about 04

My brother has the offer to buy an 04 with 28,000 miles for $1,500. The good: Hard bags, good tires, new R/R, windshield, and according to the owner, it runs great. The bad: the owner says he sheared the coupler on the interstate due to a final drive failure. Obviously, it can't be ridden as is. If all the work is done by us, meaning me, are the parts available used at a reasonable price to make it a decent deal? I'm kind of straddling the fence on this one.

If you hear ir run and the mileage is right I'd jump on it if it looks good.I bought mine 92 partially disassembled for 650 and didn't get the hard bags and all the goodies,and spent some time and money to get it up and running .For 2 grand or under after repairs he should be set up.

That is a very good price for the 04 bike. Parts to fix it would not be that high in price to fix it. Check Ebay for VN 750 parts, any older parts will fit the newer bike. You should also check the charging system if you can to make sure the Stator is in fine shape. I am sure you have read that the bike may sound good but a bad stator will not keep it from running.

It's a good buy. Start watching for final drives and couplers in parts bikes here and on ebay. My 02 (now my son's bike) has an 86 final drive on it and going strong...

Until you can actually ride it, you really don't know what you're getting.
I mean shearing a drive shaft sounds pretty radical to me.
What else is possibly 'sheared'?
Does it run nice?

IF in fact the splines on the final drive/coupling are sheared, it is pretty (unfortunately, and ultimately avoidable) common. Especially for owners who are not members of VN750.com. The ones who are members here and have not checked/lubed their splines, have no excuse. If that bike were local, I'd snap it up and fix it, and sell it to someone who needs a bike, for a good price. The parts are not so unavailable as it might seem. It's the aftermarket stuff that is so hard to come by. It takes patience, but a final drive/drive shaft combo can be found in time. Of course, you won't know how the bike rides until this is fixed, but you can tell if the bike runs, and on the center stand, you can go through the gears even with the final drive shot to see how it performs. You could also check the electrical system before plunking down the cash. I would recommend all the above. But knowing what I know about this bike, I would probably buy it sight unseen for that price and go to work on it...

I jsut had to replace the final drive and coupler and all that. I got everything for about $ 400 which I thought was a good deal but have been told I paid to much. Like others have said check out ebay, or go to findmyparts.com and post an add most salvage yards check that site and will hook you up. not hard to change out either. I went ahead and got all new driveshaft and final drive
