Time and time again I see folks comparing the Harley to their Honda 750 or whatever and bad mouthing the american bike.

In comparison, you kinda can't. The big japanese "cruiser" bikes, which are still , no matter what anyone says, "copies" of the Harley style concept , are in direct compitition to the American bikes. But Harley does not make, sport bikes, dirtbikes , etc... so the price of the "average" japanese bike is going to be lower....(but not for the "Harley style" big motored V twins)

The gap in price is alot smaller now. I personally feel you get more features per dollar on the Japanese bike, compared to the American one, but not eveyone wants alot of "bells and whistles" , so using the "Harley is overpriced" logic does not work as well as it used to.

For instance, my beloved FJR has alot of features not found on the American bikes (I say this to include Victory and not to just single out HD) My bike cost about $14,000.00 ...it has a EFI ,ABS , a very sofisticated motor featuring ceramic coated cylnders DOHC that crank out 140 hp, an electronic dash that provides time, tempature, fuel level, fuel consumption....(both average MPG and "at the moment" MPG) two tripmeters, a low fuel warning system that counts up (so you can see how many miles you have traveled when the fuel warning begins) It has linked rear brakes...so if some newbie does a panic stop by just stomping on the rear pedal , it not only activates the ABS and brakes the rear wheel , one of the front wheel caliphers brakes with it. The windscreen can be raised or lowered at the push of a button, even when moving. The duel headlights have remote knobs to adjust beam height, and along with the very protective fairing, the bike came with hardcase saddlebags (and for the price mentioned.. the rear top case)

I can't compare this to a Harley because they make nothing that is really comparable. I do know if they did offer a simular model with all the same features it would cost ALOT more than mine did.

BMW now has a sportbike that carries a MSRP around sixteen grand. (Which is a record low for a BMW) And Harley killed of Buel. So in the big picture, if you want a big V tiwn crusier, and do not want any fancy engineering or handfulls of nifty features, just a simple fun to ride bike, Harley, or Victory, are viable contenders in the market, and priced competiveally.

If you want state of the art sportbikes or sport/touring bikes, or even anything other than a "cruiser", you have to go across one of the oceans to find it.

Harley has basicly offered the same bike for the last 50 years...amongst all the trash talk no one has "noticed" either that they have it seems finally perfected it.

(Yes that is me giving Harely Davidson its props )
Well said and props duly noted.

My ol man has been looking for a Road king classic. I did notice that people are asking half as much for a comparable vulcan classic.

He likes them because he just does. He doesn't need one to be "cool".
because he's already cool and Harley apparel has no control over him.
He's not thinking it's going to "make him bad a$$".

He just likes that style of bike for it's classic looks. It's not a look at me I've got this kinda bike, thing.

I think this is the case with our Old Dog friend. And not that you guys would, but I'm sure my ol man wouldn't mind putting some miles on the blacktop with em.

Yes they (big twin Harleys) do hold their resale value very well...
In the Harley world, my Sportster is not considered a Harley, its called a girl's bike...??? But, it will kick the Harley big twins tails, maybe that's why they don't like them much...lol... But it also does not hold its resale value like the big twins Harleys either...
To me it is more like the Kaw. & Honda style cruisers of the 70/80s...
I got mine under the trade back thing where you can ride it a year and they will give you the MSRP back on a big twin, don't want one though...lol...
I might add that I have owned Simplex, Cushman, Ossa, Bultaco, Honda, and of course Kawasakis but this is my first HD...
Have a good one...Old Dog...

I know I cant get that Girls Bike thing. I think it was concocted by the Converts "ie Jap bike riders that now ride Harleys" . Last I checked my brothers Sportster was dynoed at 130 HP. Thats a lot of horsepower in a small weight bike. He has ripped a few Ninjas a new a-hole in some drag races. I love Sportsters and I dont care what they say they are not a girls bike. This is a stupid thing started when Harleys started to become popular again. 30 yrs ago you never would have heard that.

It was originally designed to compete with the european cafe racers, bikes like nortons and triumphs. they were light fast and handled well at the time harley couldnt compete then along came the sportster.

He has a 2007 500cc bullet classic. He has this thing about 1950s stuff. It's aesthetically and mechanically the bike the british company but out back in like 1955.
It's got less than 10 thou on it and it has either a blown head gasket or a
burnt valve. No the tappets weren't adjusted too tight. Last time it went down it was a scored piston.

This is a stupid thing started when Harleys started to become popular again. 30 yrs ago you never would have heard that.
It started when the weekend warriors that had money started buying Harleys ,thinking it would make them bikers. Most of them don't know a fuel injection problem from a flat tire. They wanted to see who could spend the most on their bike and there fore up the cool factor.I guess none of the younger wannabes are old enough to remember Then Came Bronson. He rode a Sporty.Girls bike is incorrect anyway. They have their roots in dirt bikes the flathead KR750 and Later the XR750 flat tracker.I had a chance to buy a brand new XR1000 in the early eighties and didn't it had dual carbs and on the other side exhaust that swept up and exited high.It was rumored to be a bad cat. While I like a big twin or a Sportster either one I would like one of the water cooled Nightrods or one of the others in the V-Rod lineup. But they drop like a rock resale wise too.Next time someone calls you Sportster ,a Girls bike ,ask 'em How many AMA#1 Plates did HD racing ever get to keep on a big twin for a year?I bet they don't have a clue what you would be talking about Old Dog.
