When you slow down whats your preferance?

What do you do?

1985 750 Vulcan-Red
36,875 miles
New timing chain
New choke cable
Clean front rim
new throttle pull back cable
new spark plugs
New Bridgestone on the back

In my thinking it is always advisable to down shift while braking. If you suddenly find you need to avoid something by accellerating, you are already in a proper gear to do so.

Those extra seconds it might take to click down to the lower gear could be the time you need to keep from being creamed.

The only time one should not worry about downshifting is when you are executing a "Panic Stop" ...here you should pull in the clutch lever all the way and brake as hard as you can.....

In many circumstances I find downshifting alone slows be the needed amount, but if more is needed I then use the brakes.

I usually try to glide, down shift [repeat] then brake. If I have enough space and time. If not then it's all brakes, both of them, and I'll figure out the gear after I stop.

I make an exception when there is a vehicle close behind me. In that case as I'm gliding and down shifting I lightly squeeze the brake lever and release about 3 times, just to flash the brake lights. Compression braking is a great thing but the vehicle behind you needs to know what you're doing.

I sometimes have problems when I'm following other bikes. All of a sudden you're right up on their back wheel. They were using compression braking and it caught me off guard. Riding in a cage gets you very accustomed to seeing a brake light as a sign the vehicle is slowing down.

I'm usually a downshifter but I use the brakes too. I'm very conscious of driver behind me and try to give multiple opportunities for them to know what I'm doing. People tend to be distracted during the morning commute to work, or half asleep sometimes.
There are many traffic lights on my route and if the light turns green, I like to be in the correct gear to proceed.

X2-100%---I use my front brake and down gearing about 100% of the time, the front brake gets the brake light going, and use the rear also if needed...

I usually just flash my brake lights a few time, and let the engine do all the work. I am up and down so many hills, I would be replacing the brakes all the time.

After driving a vehicle with a clutch for 25yrs., using the clutch and brakes to slow down to a stop is second nature. The same for my bike.

Gotta say, brake and downshifting is the way I was taught. BOTH BRAKES ALL OF THE TIME. Sownshift acording to speed and when Its time to go, you can just jam. The only time I don't follow this is when rolling up to a stop sign, then its clutch, and click all the way to first while stopping.

Both brakes mostly. Over 70% of your braking comes from the front brake itself. I also down shift, just depends if someone is right up my butt, then I will use both brakes to at least show a brake light. If no one is behind me, there is plenty of engine drag through the gears to slow you down.

Me three....
Experienced RiderCourse will remind you to be in 1st gear when you have stopped in case you need it for the careless driver behind you. Additionally, never stop directly behind the car in front....off to the side for the same reason.

I can't resist...my preference is to have an additional "E" in preference
