The Dragon in NC

I have been riding for about 6 months (5000 miles under my belt now). I have my first long ride scheduled for this July from NJ to NC. The friend I am riding with has been riding for many years and wants to ride The Dragon in NC.

After learning about this stretch of rode (380+ turns in 11 miles), and all the accidents, I am wonder if I am too much of a newbie to ride it. I am considering waiting another year before doing it. I am 38 yrs old, and ride fairly conservatively.

Has anyone ridden this rode? Being a careful, conservative rider, is this road a bigger issue for those who like to "live on the edge"?
Any advise, comments would be appreciated.

Dom

To each his own. Personally I would ride the Blue Ridge parkway. Its a lot more my laidback style. But the Dragon is a good ride too but you will see some bikers pushing the limits. Maybe some of the others from that area will tell you other good rides in that area.

Got to Madmaps.com and order their new Blue Ridge map, it shows about 14 rides including the dragon, all the gas stops, all the secret stuff, and everything around the mountains too. It is worth the few dollars it costs. I think it is waterproof too as it has some sort of coating. Remember the best rule is to ride at YOUR best speed; let the others go. You'll do fine. K

Hello Dom, After reading your post on the Dragon, I read a little about it. I like yourself am a conservative rider, at 63 yrs. of age my riding skills have diminished considerably. I live 125 miles from the Dragon, I rode the Dragon and the Cherohala loop today 4-5-06. Its a nice ride, not much time to sight see have to keep eyes on the road. Traffic was light this time of year and mid week, I only met nine cages four of them were left of center so use caution, also met six harley riders riding at about twenty five mph. Im sure they enjoyed the ride as much as the racers. Iwould reccomend you make the ride with your friend, and ride the Dragon at your pace, if he wants to challenge it let him and meet him at the end you will both enjoy your ride. Thanks to you I had a nice ride today 376 miles and survived the Dragon.
