This could be a good time to go over group ride safety again...

Yes, I agree. The day of a small rally here, I was headed home when a small group of riders caught up to me. Some of the riders passed me very close to me. And also they were riding so close to one and other, that if the first one needed to stop he would get run into by the others.

It sounds like the Brothers Speed could use a remedial class in group riding. http://www.msgroup.org/Articles.aspx?Cat=11

Lesson number 1 being to split large groups into smaller groups no larger than 6 bikes.

Jeez, at first I too thought it might be funny till I saw the fact that two riders were in critical condtion and had to be flown out....so the person making the following comment:

Is a complete ass... it is never funny when folks get "criticaly injured" what a sad excuse for a human Arnold is.

I have seen groups riding on the highway in way too tight and way too large assembly and always thought they were like a line of set up dominos waiting for someone to comeby and tip over an end.

I have always hated riding in groups, and only will in "groups" of 4-5 other bikes max, and will back off or take off if I think I am being crowded.

Oddly the groups I have seen simular to bikers in this report always seemed to be more of a hinderence to traffic than a threat to themselves.

I hope those involved that were injured survive and heal quickly.

This incident appears to the fault of the ride leader tailgating the vehicle in front. If you've ever riden in a group, then you know how important it is to have a qualified group ride leader.

I ride with the Portland Road Runners Motorcycle Group, which often has large group rides of 40+ riders. Never have I ever witnessed the ride leader tailgating or endangering the group in any way. We ride in a tight staggered pattern, each rider is encouraged to ride within their limits only and both ride leader and 'tail gunner' work together to insure a safe ride (i.e., the 'tail gunner' will secure a lane making it safe for the group to enter). Group riding is a lot of fun, just make sure that the ride leader and tail gunner are qualified and responsible.

Here is a link to 14 safety tips for group riding. (It is a subgroup of 258 safety tips, on all aspects of riding.) Especially note the last few lines of tip#62.

No matter how big the group, split up into groups no larger than six bikes if even one rider is inexperienced with group riding.

Break up into groups no larger than 8, even if every rider is familiar with the riding habits of every other member of the group..
