Unsure Rebuild - VN700

I recently aquired an 85 VN700 parts bike with 21k mi, starts right up and idles nice but it has rod knock under load, doesn't shift into 2nd, had it there once & 3rd - 5th came easy, needs fork seals & water pump seal for sure. I'm thinking winter project, would like to lower the rear/rake & chop. Don't know if it's worth the effort without replacing the entire engine/tranny... Any and all opinions/suggestions welcome, this will be my first bike project, but I am a capable shade tree auto tech.

befor tear down try grambos trick to see if you cant get the tick out... we'll go from there order a set of case gaskets from cheap cycle parts (clutch side case cover (the bigger one) ,tran cover (with sight window) those 2 for sure but it may aslo be a good idea to get the stator cover as well... it may take a lil time to get u the parts chances are someone here has a spring for ya u may want to order the mechanical seal as well from cheap cycle parts just so u arnt waiting for shipment twice ... usually with that spring it just pops out and u can push it back in but there has been a few cases where they break...

Lance said he had pre made parts list so im sure he'll chime in here in a min to lend a hand... btw Lance can u send me the bookmarks/lists so i can be a click away of givin this info out to?

Here is a link to get heavy duty replacement springs for the ACCT, along with still pics and directions, or a video to see a rebuild of the ACCT.

www.tocmanufacturing.com

They usually solve the problem, but if not, a manual (MCCT) cam chain tensioner is also available here. Other members have modifiied their ACCT into a MCCT for a lot less $$.

There is also a free downloadable Kawi service manual on that site, but it is BIG (117 meg, 2295 pages).

Garage
as i see in your noob post, you got both the 700 and 750, ride the heck out of the 750, and rat/chop/and bob away at the 700.... even if you need another engine.... wich i doubt... you will still be way under budget and set on having a good reliable chopper.
