Lousey Gas Milage...

Tonight, I got on the bike for the first time in 2 weeks (nothing but rain around here, today is first day of good weather).

Tripometer had 60 miles on it since last fill-up. Gas gauge doesn't work.

I got a lousey 2 miles down the road...and was running out of gas. Flipped the thing over to the reserve tank, got about another 1/2 mile...and the engine died. Pulled over, put on the choke, pumped the hell outta the throttle, and after about 3 minutes, finally fired it back up again.

Is it normal for it to take so long to re-route from the reserve tank?

And...is it normal to only get a little over 60 miles on a full tank?

Could be because I'm keeping up with traffic on the interstate AND I'm a big guy (310#).

What say ye?

I've only used reserve once but it only took about 20 seconds to kick in. as for 60 miles on a tank I think I would be looking for leaks. should get about 130-150 maybe a little less with your size.

Are you getting that mileage with or without reserve?

Are you absolutely sure ya only did 60 miles since the last fill-up?
How many gallons did it take to fill it up again?

Also, the carbs are vacuum operated. Twisting the throttle doesn't pump gas into them until the engine is turning over.

That is 60 miles BEFORE the reserve.

And, yes, I am absolutely certain. I always reset the tripometer when I fill up.

I don't see or smell any leaks.

I am 290 pounds or better,and running 150 main jets,ear shave with K&N filters and a scootworks exhaust bypass with stock mufflers with 4 -3/8 " holes drilled in each,An crank it out pretty regularly and I get about 120 to130 before going on reserve,And I think this is kinda low for what these other guys are getting,Something ain't right if yours is stock

You may have a disconnected vacuum hose or a your fuel tap (petcock) may need service. Turning to reserve should kick in right away.

What was weird, after I swapped over to reserve, and the engine still died, I had to pull over. Before I got it cranked up again, I opened the tank, and there seemed to be about 1/3 or more of a tank left. I could swish it around.

Could there be something blocking the gas flow when it gets to about 1/3 of a tank, on the regular setting, but gets bypassed when I switch to reserve?

Very bizarre.

Very bizarre.
Basicaly once you hit 1/3 you are at reserve.

The pickup is at a lower level for reserve.
