Jacking up CHROME!

Been meaning to ask this for awhile. Say you wanted to "dechrome" something, what would you do?

Can you just sand it and paint it? What can you do if you don't want chrome? So much comes in chrome alone. Can you powder coat over it? Etc.

I found this license plate frame that I think should be solid enough I can relocate the turnsignals to it. Just want it black...

I got some chrome saddlebag supports from ebay that had too much rust to clean up and look good. I just roughed them up with some 80 grit sand paper and spray painted them. 80 grit may have been excessive, but that's what I had laying around. Make sure you get self etching primer though. I did one with regular spray primer, and it didn't stick very well. Looked pretty good when I got done and I'm certainly no pro when it comes to painting.

Mom, I'm not wearing my helmet only for the purpose of taking this picture and
the background was digitally blurred to make it look like I'm going really fast.

Media blast is the best, if you want to go the cheap route sandpaper in various grots and lots of elbow grease.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. I always like to know the "right way" (usually for future reference) and the "poor man's way" (usually what is actually an option).

If you put a tenth the effort into this as you are into painting your tins I think it will turn out great. I had read the media blasting worked better than sand paper sometimes even getting the chrome completely off. I had some media, but I was completely out of blasters so I didn't go that route LOL.
